Boyo

A horseman from Cas en Bas

Gabriel Laurent, known as Boyo, was born and raised in Saint Lucia. He spent years working with horses and guiding riders along these beaches and trails.

That local knowledge, of this coast and of these horses, is the backbone of every ride at Roots.

Lauren

A lifelong love of horses and their welfare

Lauren Laurent MSc, BSc (Hons), MBPsS, FRSA grew up in the UK with a lifelong love of horses and a passion for their care and welfare.

She came to Saint Lucia with her son, Saquori, and Luther, the family’s Labradoodle, who has never once doubted that he belongs to the herd.

A family

Two worlds, one family

“Our story brings together two worlds,” Lauren says. Boyo’s years with horses on this coast, and her lifelong passion for their welfare. When the family made the move to Saint Lucia, those two worlds became one.

Saquori quickly discovered his own love of riding, and it wasn’t long before horses became the heart of family life. The dream began with a simple wish: to share the experience of riding through tropical trails and swimming with horses in the Caribbean Sea. With a small team who share their values, Lauren, Boyo and Saquori built Roots: a place where horses, people and nature live in harmony, and where the horses’ wellbeing always comes first.

The horses

The horses who needed us

Along the way, the family took in horses in need. Saffron came too weak to eat. Palee was severely malnourished. Miracle arrived with her foal Magic, both in very poor condition. Each was given time, patient care and a safe home, and each has recovered.

Wasine

The first foal born at Roots

In May 2026, Saffron, the mare who had once been too weak to eat, gave birth to a filly. She was the first foal born at Roots, so the family named her Wasine, which means “Roots” in Creole.

A mare given a second chance, and a new life that began at Roots.

What comes next

Better lives for every horse on the island

Roots means staying connected to nature, treating every horse with kindness and respect, and leaving something good behind. In August 2026, Lauren and Boyo submitted the National Equine Welfare Framework to the Government of Saint Lucia, setting out how standards could rise for the estimated 700 to 800 horses on the island.

Every ride you book helps pay for the herd’s care and for that work.
